My Why

My name is Phyllis Phillips, and I have lived in Laguna Beach for almost fifty years and raised my daughters here, feeling so blessed to have them grow up in this magical city. I love that my girls could walk home from the movies, ride the trolley during the summers, go to safe schools, and grow up in a secure environment. Neil Purcell was a respected police chief who was always available for a chat or sometimes a reminder about appropriate behavior. He was a mentor to the kids of our city and his team. I felt great about our police, who they were, and what they stood for.

When I was invited to join the Laguna Beach Police and Community Foundation, I was honored to be asked and to have the opportunity to show my support for Jeff Calvert and his police officers. Chief Calvert reminded me of Chief Purcell, a bit more modern and with even more innovative ideas, but the same motivation to keep Laguna a safe community where our families could thrive. Chief Calvert does not sit on his laurels but defines a purpose-driven leader; he and his officers have made a significant impact on this community.

When we are asked to support and advocate for an organization we admire and know that we can also make an impact, when we are given the privilege to be part of our community at large, how can we not? When I was asked to be on the Laguna Beach Police and Community Foundation Board of Directors, I was honored to be surrounded by such compelling community leaders and friends who were as passionate as I am. I am grateful for this opportunity.
