FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bowl by the Sea for the LBPD to Support the City’s First Mounted Patrol Unit

Laguna Beach, CA – March 5, 2025 – The Laguna Beach Police & Community Foundation (LBPCF) invites you to a private evening of camaraderie, competition, and community spirit at Bowl by the Sea for the LBPD— an exclusive event in support of the Laguna Beach Police Department’s first-ever Mounted Patrol Unit (MPU).

Join Laguna Beach Police Chief Jeff Calvert, LBPCF board members, and LBPD officers on Wednesday, April 2, from 4:00 – 6:30 PM at the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club for a private evening of lawn bowling, sunset drinks, dinner, and prizes—all to help equip the MPU for success. Proceeds from the event will directly fund essential equipment for the unit.

Why a Mounted Patrol Unit?

“The Mounted Patrol Unit will provide a unique and highly effective way to enhance public safety,” said LBPD Chief Jeff Calvert. “Mounted officers offer crucial support during large events, enhancing crowd control and public safety. They can assist in search-and-rescue operations in rugged or hard-to-reach areas and conduct fire-watch operations during Red Flag days. Their elevated vantage point also makes them highly effective in deterring crime and other issues impacting the quality of life for our residents.”

Once established, the Laguna Beach MPU will join the Orange County Regional Mounted Enforcement Unit, a coalition of 60 officers from departments across the county, ready to respond to large-scale public safety needs. Participating agencies include the police departments of Santa Ana, Buena Park, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, Irvine, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano will assist the Department in training the officers and help with best practices for procuring and caring for the horses. “We’re delighted to be working with the Laguna Beach Police Department on this important effort,” said Dana Butler-Moburg, CEO of The Shea Center. “We have seen firsthand the effectiveness of how mounted officers from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department contribute to public safety. It’s a privilege to be able to contribute to the knowledge and safety of the Laguna Beach Police Department Mounted Police Unit and their horses through education and training.”

“This is an exciting opportunity for our community to come together and support a program that will benefit Laguna Beach in so many ways,” said Glenn Gray, President of the LBPCF. “Form a team, meet LBPD officers, and enjoy a fun-filled evening—all for a great cause. Teams of four include one LBPD officer – what a unique way to get to know some of Laguna Beach’s finest.”
